Coastal Arts Market

Diana Shutt Designs

Picture
I was raised in Western Pennsylvania where I lived for most of my life. In 2012, my husband and I purchased a home in Frederick, Maryland. We became full-time Frederick residents in 2015.  Family, traveling, work, flowers, and my faith have influenced much of who I am and what I enjoy. I am a self-taught crafter. While still working, I began hand-painting old ornaments that were sitting in my closet.  This was a way for me to relax. My first ornaments had much simpler designs, but were as colorful as the ornaments I paint today.  I love using color in my designs - some colors are subtle, but most are bright. Every ornament, vase, candle holder and coaster that I paint is unique. My mission is to share beauty through color and originality, by painting primarily on recycled items. I enjoy transforming them into colorful decorative objects to be enjoyed during the Christmas season and year-round.

Diana will be at our market on September 12th and again on October 24th.
Don't miss out on her beautiful ornaments.

Cyn Sational Art

Picture

Hello, My name is Cynthia Snyder.
I am a full-time artist creating original paintings and handmade items.  My favorite medium is acrylic paint on canvas. As a child, I always enjoyed artwork. That is when I began a love affair with acrylic paints. I love the way they move around the canvas and love the benefit of them being fast drying. I definitely have a Signature Style, My Paintings are Very Whimsical. I use a lot of Vibrant Colors and have a unique embossed technique, I began experimenting with caulking and now use it in my work, and most of my painting are embellished with natural elements to add texture and dimension to my artwork.

Originally from Virginia, where I received My Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Arts and Design, I now reside in Maryland with my husband Matthew, where I have been lucky enough to share my art with others.  My work can be found in many beach homes, adding a touch of 'color.' I love to share my art as it makes me smile to know that I added a little color to the lives of those that appreciate it.  I love creating happy art and I hope my art work will bring a smile to your heart.

Art is my Passion and has become my creative freedom.  For me, color is life!

Nancy Campbell ~ Timeless Threadcraft

My grandmother was the family seamstress while her three sisters and their daughters were the knitters, crocheters, and quilters.  She didn’t learn those skills until she was in her sixties so I learned with her.  I was fascinated by all of it as a child and to this day love the tactile sensations of working with yarn and the visual pleasure provided by color.  The basic techniques are truly timeless as are many of the patterns.  Part of the fun, however, is searching for new patterns and adapting them to add flair.  No two pieces are exactly alike.
My husband and I moved to Maryland from Wisconsin so he could pursue a graduate degree.  We’ve lived in Sunderland in Calvert County for 32 years in a house built in 1920.  Much of my working life has involved contract and business management with NASA and NOAA contractors.  Needlework was my stress reliever and the source of many wedding and new baby gifts.  Now I’m looking forward to turning a hobby into a small business, spending time with fellow artisans, and meeting new people.

Wendy & Bryan Young

The Coastal Arts Market Showcases Bryan and Wendy Young. The Young's joined the Coastal Arts Market when we started our market four years ago. You won't want to miss these unique home decor items made from wine barrels. Yes, that's right everything they make starts with the wood from a wine barrel. Here's a little info about the Young's and a sneak peak at some of their beautiful hand crafted products, enjoy......

We are the Young's! We have a passion for creating new things from old things. We like having a feeling of purpose. We love to travel, we love the outdoors & we are both very social people! We bike, hike, kayak, run, we are Tough Mudders and we LOVE our 4 kids. One is in the Coast Guard, one is just out of college and 2 are in still in college. We started this business because living in the Shenandoah valley with all of the wineries around us....well, how could we NOT? We LOVE wine! We live part of the time in Southern Maryland because our jobs keep us here, and the rest of our time is spent traveling and working out of our workshop in our Virginia home.

We tailor our items to what we are familiar with and themes that we hold dear to our hearts. Bryan is a Maryland native & anyone from Maryland knows blue crabs are a big influence in the life and cuisine of the area! In true Marylander fashion, we have several Blue Crab and Sea Creature themed items such as Mermaids, Ship's Wheels and Starfish. Bryan is also a retired Navy Chief and we take great pride in being a veteran owned small business. Many of our items feature a Navy anchor in support of our Military friends and family. Bryan is owner, creator and designer of the products made by NHW&W. Wendy is a Pennsylvania native (a MD transplant) and has been living in Southern Maryland for 24 years. She has always loved being creative (mostly in the kitchen) and has found a new love and passion in wine barrel re-purposing. She is also owner, creator and designer and does most of the marketing and event coordination for the business.

I grew up in Pennsylvania where my grandmother taught me to make my first dress at the age of seven. I sewed clothing for myself and my family for years and then started quilting about twelve years ago. After three years of making large and small quilts, I purchased an embroidery machine. I sew almost every day and it seems there is always a project going on in my head. My career in that other life (before retirement) was nursing for over forty years. Most of those years were spent nursing children and most of my embroidery projects have to do with children. I have found no greater joy in life than children, both my own and those I have spent time with over the years. My husband and I have lived in southern Maryland for almost forty years and have one son who teaches music at Dynard Elementary.

Duty called and I served 24 years in the military. After retiring in 1992, I had an interest in woodwork so I started experimenting — furniture, painted wood, lighthouses, windmills, etc. I was reading a magazine about wood one day and ran across an article about intarsia. Intarsia is a thirteenth century Italian art form consisting of mosaic pictures in wood. I decided to try my hand at this this art form and and before long I was hooked. In the beginning, it was more a hobby. I made various pieces of intarsia and gave them away to family and friends. After a while, I began receiving phone calls from people who had seen my work and the idea began to form that I could possibly sell my product. In 1998, I embarked on the art and craft show market and the rest is history!

I use hard and soft wood (i.e. walnut, mahogany, cherry, pine, beech, holly, ash – to name a few) and exotic wood from Africa and South America. Some pictures have over 300 pieces. Each piece is carefully cut with a scroll saw and then sanded which gives the item a 3 dimensional affect. An outline of the project is cut using plywood and the various pieces are glued together and then sprayed with 3 coats of polyurethane.
Most of my Intarsia pieces have an animal, nautical or wild life theme. I have also expanded my craft to include a ships wheel table with an intarsia theme. I also make a wooden banks, pens and lately I've included a line of military themed plaques. I do accept custom orders.
